Morris Counseling Program Off to a Great Start!

The James B. Morris School Counseling Program is off to a great start this year!  Morris has two new elementary school counselors.  Jennifer Good is working with the 3rd-5th grade students, while Jaime Robinson is working with the Kindergarten-2nd grade students.  The school counseling program works closely with staff, students, and families to provide support and guidance throughout the school year.  Our school counselors follow the ASCA National Model (, which works to develop students’ academic, career, and personal/social needs.  A big part of the program involves working directly with students through classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and individual counseling.

This year’s classroom guidance lessons kicked off with welcoming students into their new classrooms with our “Happy New Year” unit.  This unit centered around respecting others, making decisions, and using self-control.  Our “Personal Safety” unit was up next, and students are currently learning about topics such as personal space, stranger safety, internet safety, peer pressure, safe touches, and boundaries.

The counseling department is also implementing “Motivation” groups with students.  These groups are utilized to work with students on specific motivation-related skills, such as goal-setting, challenges, following directions, and listening skills.  Counselors are also conducting small groups on topics such as social skills, cooperation/friendship, and managing emotions.
